Island Of Santorini Through Eras

In terms of Santorini's historical origins, there used to be three smaller, less important islands in its place, which were later amalgamated into Santorini. Profitis Ilias, the Rocks above Athinios (where the contemporary harbor is located), and Monolithos, an isolated rock on the island's east side, were these locations. This entire formation was once known as "Strongili," which means "Round."

The island's name was changed again to "Kallisti" about 1300 BC when the Phoenicians arrived and gained control. Things changed again in 1115 BC when the Dorians from Sparta took control and christened the island Santorini after King Thira.

New modern structures, communities, harbors, and temples were constructed during this time. Santorini became a Christian hub throughout the Byzantine period.

Santorini had some autonomy and self–government even during the Ottoman Empire's reign, as the Turks never actually occupied the island. Residents had the right to choose their representatives, who dealt with Ottoman and Venetian officials. In truth, both the Turks and the Republic of Venice forced the island to pay taxes. Thira or Firà, the principal town, is today known around the world for its white-washed houses, Byzantine white churches with sky-blue domes, and attractive tiny streets. luxury villa santorini Furthermore, one may find practically everything in the many little shops, ranging from gems to complex artwork, and from regional specialties to delightful wines.
