The Cultural Centre Of Chania

Akti Koundourioti is one of the most well known parts of Chania. It only takes a walk to discover all the traditional souvenir shops and the little taverns. At Akti Tombazi one can  find the Kucuk Hassan Mosque (Yali Mosque or Seaside Mosque), which nowadays is also a cultural center and houses various exhibitions, free of charge. It is worth visiting to get a taste of culture and the local artistic mood. Walking on the Tombazi Coast, on the way to the lighthouse, the visitor will pass in front of the small marina with its beautiful boats, the large Katehaki square and the Mikis Theodorakis Theater, until they reach in front of the Venetian Neoria, the Venetian shipyards and later warehouses of the Ottomans, built in the 16th century. Neoria is also known as Arsenalia or Tarsanades, since they changed their name depending on the conquerors. Of the 23 total Neoria that were built, along the entire length of the Coast of Chania, today only 7 survive. With a length of 50 meters each and their vaulted entrance were impressive buildings of their time.
