The Cultural Centre Of Chania

Akti Koundourioti is one of the most well known parts of Chania. It only takes a walk to discover all the traditional souvenir shops and the little taverns. At Akti Tombazi one can  find the Kucuk Hassan Mosque (Yali Mosque or Seaside Mosque), which nowadays is also a cultural center and houses various exhibitions, free of charge. It is worth visiting to get a taste of culture and the local artistic mood. Walking on the Tombazi Coast, on the way to the lighthouse, the visitor will pass in front of the small marina with its beautiful boats, the large Katehaki square and the Mikis Theodorakis Theater, until they reach in front of the Venetian Neoria, the Venetian shipyards and later warehouses of the Ottomans, built in the 16th century. Neoria is also known as Arsenalia or Tarsanades, since they changed their name depending on the conquerors. Of the 23 total Neoria that were built, along the entire length of the Coast of Chania, today only 7 survive. With a length of 50 meters each and their vaulted entrance were impressive buildings of their time.

The sailing club of Chania is also located there. The Old Customs building, the Grand Arsenal, which houses the Center for Mediterranean Architecture, and the 3 other Neoria, Neoria of Moro, are also located there.

Picturesque Chania

Chania is one of these cities where the charm depends on the memories that accompany it as the years go by. Α monument, a sound, a building, a smell, enchant the visitor when he comes across them. When memories are accompanied by written and photographic testimonies the description in the city acquires an additional charm that everyone enjoys, in every corner, alley and square.

Every step, every cobbled path and memories, a recording from the past, with knights and janissaries, with Levantine Cretans, hodzas and dervishes who lived, passed, fought, suffered and rejoiced in this place. The history of the city of Chania goes back to the 2nd millennium BC and it is connected with the history of Crete as a whole. The glow of the Minoan period was originally identified with eastern Crete, but the excavations of recent decades revealed the Minoan spread in the prefecture of Chania but also in Chania itself. Especially in the Early Minoan period (3rd millennium BC) on the hill of Kastelli, in the center of the later historical city of Chania, an organized settlement was created with luxurious houses, the city of Kydonia.

The proximity of the settlement to the sea, but also to the fertile hinterland, allowed its flourishing which continued in the 2nd millennium BC. The settlement extended beyond the hill of Kasteli, in the area of Splantzia, and south to the Municipal Garden, where archaeologists found vaulted and chambered tombs.

Numerous historical sites, picturesque spots and an amazing nightlife wait for you to come in Chania and spend the best time of your life. chania hotels
