The Most Famous Volcanic Island

Santorini is considered by many to be the most well known and preferred island in all Greece, for vacation all year round. The picturesque scenery consists of a group of small volcanic islands that were created by the solidified lava. These islands are: Thirassia, Aspronesi, Mikrà Kameni, Palea  Kameni and Nea  Kameni.  It is perhaps one of the most famous islands in Greece as well as the greater Mediterranean region. Let alone the mesmerizing sunset that people can enjoy, its landscape is directly connected to its long history. santorini villas

Its historical roots go back to the prehistoric era. It is constituted of a volcano, surrounded by a number of smaller islands around its central tip. Once upon a time, the whole volcano was above sea level. Still, around some 3,600 years ago an unexpected and extra harsh eruption was the reason why it was partially submerged under water. In the present day, only we can only see the eastern edge of the ancient crater since the rest of the complex is sunk into the sea. Archaeologists and historians say that perhaps that same eruption could be the reason that the legendary city of Atlantis was sunk. Plato also makes references of this catastrophic event in his narrations. After the explosion, a wide half moon shaped bay was created, the famous "Caldera". The eruption in Santorini is thought to be the second largest volcanic eruption in human history.
