Mykonos, with the sandy
beaches and the worldwide known nightlife, is a unique, vibrant island, major
member of Greece’s Cyclades islands. Whether one is looking for a tiny,
secluded cove or a wide stretch of sugar-white sand and deep emerald waters,
this island has a beach for every taste!
Besides the dazzling
sand and insatiable revelers however, Mykonos is blessed with innumerous
charms. The cubic whitewashed Cycladic buildings constitute a main
characteristic and have been an inspiration to millions of visitors throughout
the years. The fascinating fusion of cozy traditions with luxurious facilities
and services have been a pole of attraction for young people, celebrities and
jet setters ever since. In contrast to other Cycladic capitals, the
capital town (Hora) is not amphitheatrically built but instead it spreads out
over a wide area. It is one of the best examples of Cycladic architecture and a
captivating attraction.
Mykonos
has also got a fair share in Greek mythology. The famous Island is said to owe
its name to a local hero, Mykonos, who was the grandson of god Apollo. Myth has
it that the Island of Mykonos was formed when, during the Gigantomachy - the great battle between Zeus and the Giants -
Hercules, after killing the Giants, threw them in the sea where they
petrified and turned into huge rocks. Just a breath away lies the sacred island
of Delos which was supposed to be the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo
and Artemis.
